The best and worst resale values

Buying a car or truck that depreciates more slowly is a good way to reduce the cost of ownership.

But it's a little surprising that the latest study by Kelley Blue Book says Volkswagens have retained more of their original price over the past five years than any other brand.

Models with the best resale value usually score well in quality and reliability surveys. VWs don't.

But their European flair and fuel efficient engines have earned a loyal following among younger buyers willing to pay top dollar for used Rabbit hatchbacks and Jetta sedans.

Here are the top 10 models for resale value and the percent of their value they've retained over the past five years:

Volkswagen (48.1%), BMW (45.6%), Acura (45.4%), Honda (45.2%), Porsche (44.9%), Subaru (44.4%), Lexus (43.2%), Infiniti (43.1%), Audi (42.6%), Toyota (41.4%)

Here are the 10 worst brands for resale value:

Suzuki (27.6%), Kia (30.4%), GMC (32.5%), Mercury (32.5%), Dodge (32.5%), Chrysler (32.5%), Lincoln (33.3%), Jeep (33.3%), Ford (33.8%), Jaguar (34.1%)
