8 ways to save gas
- Consider buying a hybrid. The three we recommend -- Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Sedan and Ford Fusion -- offer surprising comfort, cool technology and more affordable sticker prices.
- Too small? Consider a small SUV that is fun, more fuel-efficient than bigger SUVs and still flexible for families. The Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester are our choices.
- Slow down. Drive 55 miles per hour instead of 65 and the EPA estimates you'll use 10% to 15% less fuel.
- Accelerate smoothly and brake softly. Take your foot off the gas and allow the car to coast up towards red lights rather than racing towards them and slamming on the brakes.
- Turn the engine off anytime you're parked and waiting more than 30 seconds.
- Keep tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and increase fuel usage by 3% to 4%.
- Maintain a constant speed. Use cruise control whenever possible on the highway.
- Don't tie luggage on the roof rack. The additional drag can reduce fuel economy by as much as 5%.
