8 ways to save gas
- Consider buying a small, fuel-efficient car. The three we recommend -- Honda Fit, Nissan Versa and the Scion xD -- offer surprising comfort and performance.
- Too small? Too boring? Consider a compact wagon that has more room and personality. The Chevrolet HHR, Scion xB and Kia Spectra5 SX are our choices for a fun way to spend less at the pump.
- Slow down. Drive 55 miles per hour instead of 65 and the EPA estimates you'll use 10% to 15% less fuel.
- Accelerate smoothly and brake softly. Take your foot off the gas and allow the car to coast up towards red lights rather than racing towards them and slamming on the brakes.
- Turn the engine off anytime you're parked and waiting more than 30 seconds.
- Keep tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance and increase fuel usage by 3% to 4%.
- Maintain a constant speed. Use cruise control whenever possible on the highway.
- Don't tie luggage on the roof rack. The additional drag can reduce fuel economy by as much as 5%.
