Q. The power train control module and starter went out on my 2007 Ford Taurus. The car has 34,500 miles on it and is still under warranty. I just had the 30,000-mile checkup two months ago, and they said everything was OK. Is it?
A. We suspect your car is OK, but we understand your concern.
You may have heard about electrical and mechanical problems that plagued the Taurus in the '90s. A slipping camshaft sprocket that caused extensive damage to engines in the 1996-99 Taurus SHO was our favorite.
It's only natural to wonder, "What's next?"
But since the 2000 model year, the Taurus has developed a reputation for being more reliable and less trouble-prone.
The only chronic problems we've heard about are bad fuel pumps and differential pressure feedback EGR sensors. Identifix says it usually costs $254 for parts and $130 for labor to replace the fuel pump and $68 for parts and $32.50 for labor to fix the feedback sensor. So those aren't hugely expensive repairs.
